The UMAC Artist Development Award is a new award recognising an emerging performing artist who demonstrates potential for leadership and innovation within the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) student theatre community and is designed to encourage further evolution of their practice.
Presented as part of UMSU Theatre Awards, the award celebrates UMAC’s commitment to artist development and to fostering a dynamic and inspiring cultural community at the University of Melbourne.
As the inaugural recipient, Arabella Frahn-Starkie will receive a cash prize in addition to mentorship opportunities with the UMAC leadership team to support the development her next creative project.
Arabella Frahn-Starkie is a dance artist and researcher who recently created Pictures & Ghosts for Guild Fringe: Dance Edit, presented by UMSU's Union House Theatre as part of Melbourne Fringe 2024.
In 2021, Arabella completed her Honours at the Victorian College of the Arts, where she also received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Contemporary Dance) in 2016. Over the past few years her artistic practice has seen a preoccupation with documenting and thinking about how to archive the ephemera of dance. As a dancer she has worked with an array of choreographers, visual artists and researchers including Rebecca Jensen, Jo Lloyd, Siobhan McKenna, Sandra Parker, David Rosetzky, Dr Katie Lee, and Dr Petra Gemeinboeck.
Congratulations Arabella!
