Explore courses, extracurricular activities and other arts and cultural events at the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne is home to over 15 museums and galleries and over 30 individual collections, all of which play an intrinsic role in campus life, including teaching and learning, research, and student engagement.
The University’s wide range of museums, galleries and venues offer a diverse range of programs, events and exhibitions. They provide welcoming spaces for both the University and the broader community to explore, interact, experience and be inspired by collections and creators.
With an energetic and innovative culture, the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music is the proud home of the Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Whether studying, working or visiting, the Faculty supports the creative cultural outputs of the University's students and staff, as well as the beautiful purpose-built Southbank campus on which we are situated.
Study languages, literature and linguistics, media and communication, and politics and international studies with Australia's leading Arts faculty.
The University of Melbourne's Faculty of Arts is Australia’s pre-eminent Arts Faculty, at the heart of the country’s second oldest and highest rated University. The flagship Bachelor of Arts degree has been offered for over 160 years. It is the number one choice in Arts for generations of students engaging with humanities, social sciences and languages.
The Faculty of Arts includes five schools, each home to globally recognised researchers and intellectually engaged student cohorts: the Asia Institute, the School of Culture and Communication, the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, the School of Languages and Linguistics and the School of Social and Political Sciences.
Union House Theatre (UHT) is the hub of extracurricular student theatre at the University of Melbourne Parkville campus. In addition to presenting productions at the Arts and Cultural Building, UHT programs a range of theatrical activities including workshops, professional pathways, mentorships and residencies.
UHT also supports over 20 autonomous student theatre groups as they produce their own productions in the Guild and Union Theatres.
Beginning as the Union Theatre Repertory Company in 1953, Melbourne Theatre Company is Australia's oldest professional theatre company. Over 70 years, the Company has presented more than 850 productions and been at the forefront of groundbreaking new work that has shaped artists, audiences and the country.
As Victoria’s state theatre company and a department of the University of Melbourne, Melbourne Theatre Company deliver an irresistible annual program of live performance and related activity at their Southbank Theatre home and as resident theatre company at Arts Centre Melbourne. With MTC Digital Theatre, productions can be streamed at home, around Australia.
UMSU's George Paton Gallery is a contemporary art gallery presenting projects by University of Melbourne students. The Gallery encourages experimental, collaborative, and education-focused approaches to contemporary art and related projects and provide a supportive platform for student artists, writers and curators.
Established in 1974, the George Paton Gallery became the first institutionally supported space of its kind in Australia, and a model for subsequent centres of contemporary art. Within its histories lie forecasts of critical and emerging shifts across the arts landscape in Australia, including feminist practice, the use of new media, the phenomenon of the “Curator” and the return(s) of painting.
The Gallery is free to attend, and invites proposals from students from all departments to participate in the program.
